1920s Flapper Deco Sautoir NecklaceGorgeous, long 1920s era flapper necklace. The most prominent bead color is one I am calling ecru. It's a shiny off-white, that is achieved by using clear beads with white or off-white thread. There is also a shiny royal blue, and a pink that is between bubblegum pink and shocking pink, with a few bright spring green beads serving as accents, and used sparingly. Along the ribbon-like surface (sautoir is French for ribbon) there are geometric and floral patterns. The most fabulous feature of this necklace is that there are 5 single strands of beads connecting the ribbon parts. These are all intact! But below the part where the 2 "ribbons" meet in a pendant, there were once probably 10 loops of single strands, there are now only 7 and loose threads. The geometric patterns on the ribboms and where they meet at the bottom of the pendant definitely feel like they came from the Art Deco era. The skill, talent and patience involved with this kind of beadwork is absolutely astonishing. This is an heirloom treasure from the roaring twenties, and it's quite long: Laid flat from the back of the neck, doubled to the part where the strands loop and drop is 17" (see the photo with the measuring tape). In the length of the necklace, the ribbons are 3/4" wide (9 beads--alternating with 5 single strands). Really lovely vintage condition.
